Rafael Nadal pulled off an epic comeback to claim the 2022 Australian Open title and become the first man to win 21 grand slam singles titles.

Going into the final against Daniil Medvedev, Nadal was tied with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic on 20 grand slam wins.

The Spaniard's chance at history seemed to be slipping away on Sunday night as he lost the first two sets before digging deep to triumph 2-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.

At the age of 35 and without a grand slam title to his name since October 2020, Nadal showed all of his trademark grit in a record-breaking victory that sees him surpass long-time rival Federer.

The Swiss star was unable to compete at the Australian Open this year and despite missing out on the record himself, sent a classy message to Nadal after the match.

"What a match! To my friend and great rival @rafaelnadal, heartfelt congratulations on becoming the first man to 21 grand slam singles titles," Federer wrote via an Instagram story

"A few months ago we were joking about both being on crutches. Amazing. Never underestimate a great champion.

"Your incredible work ethic, dedication and fighting spirit are an inspiration to me and countless others around the world.

"I am proud to share this era with you and honoured to play a role in pushing you to achieve more. As you have done for me for the past 18 years.

"I am sure you have more achievements ahead but for now enjoy this one!"

Nadal came into the tournament as the sixth seed with world number one Djokovic withdrawn from the tournament after having his Australian visa revoked

The Serbian was a hot favourite to win another Australian Open and claim the grand slam record himself, but like Federer was quick to congratulate Nadal for his achievement.

"Congratulations to @RafaelNadal for 21st GS. Amazing achievement," Djokovic wrote via Twitter

"Always impressive fighting spirit that prevailed another time. Enhorabuena."
