Modified paragraph 1

Justin Verlander has finally logged a win in the World Series, and it couldn't have come at a better time.

After eight career starts in the Fall Classic had netted Verlander an 0-6 record, the Astros ace hung around for five innings in Thursday's Game 5, allowing just one run to spearhead the Astros' 3-2 win and its first lead in the series, three games to two.

Why a fan called Rob Manfred a 'dumbass' at the World Series

It didn't come easy. When Verlander gave up a leadoff home run to Kyle Schwarber after the Astros got him a run in the first inning, there was an air of "here we go again." But he settled in and, despite some high-stress innings, he was able to shut the Phillies down and come away with a victory.

It would be wrong, however, to pretend it was all Verlander's doing. The Astros' bullpen was nearly flawless, with Rafael Montero giving up one run in the bottom of the eighth after the Astros tacked on an insurance run in the top of the frame. Also, sterling defensive plays from Trey Mancini and Chas McCormick saved the relievers down the stretch.

As for the Astros' bats, the story Thursday lies in the 1-2 punch at the top of the order. Jose Altuve has officially broken out of the slump he carried into the World Series; he went 2 for 4 with a walk and scored twice. The other run was courtesy of Jeremy Peña, who hit his fourth home run this postseason, a solo shot off Noah Syndergaard to chase the Phillies' starter out of the game in the fourth inning.

The Phillies, to their credit, battled, but they came up a day late and a dollar short in the end. The bullpen was excellent, all things considered. But an inability to produce with runners on base proved to be the difference. Now they must return to Houston and win two straight games.

Astros vs. Phillies live updates, highlights from 2022 World Series

(All times Eastern.)

12:04 a.m. -- On the full count Harper goes and Castellanos grounds out to -- who else -- Peña to give the Astros the win. Verlander gets his first career World Series win, and the Astros go back to Houston with a 3-2 series lead.

Midnight -- Pressly had no interest in pitching to Harper. Fell back in the count and then hit him pitching him inside. Tying run is now on first, winning run is at the plate.

11:58 p.m. -- Astros defense continues to shine as McCormick makes a leaping grab at the wall to rob Realmuto of extra bases. Unbelievable grab there and the Phillies are down to their last out of Game 5. But what an out it is: Bryce Harper.

11:56 p.m. -- Pressly gets Hoskins swinging through a cutter for the first out of the inning, and that brings up Realmuto with Harper on deck.

11:52 p.m. -- From "I f------ hate it here" to "I love this place." Alec Bohm's hero's journey is something special.

11:49 p.m. -- The Phillies turn the old 5-3 double play as Bohm gets Altuve by a step on his cross-diamond throw. Heading into the ninth, it'll be Hoskins-Realmuto-Harper against Pressly.

11:46 p.m. -- Maldonado breaks his bat there and finds a hole in the infield to advance Hensley. Altuve now comes up with one out and runners on first and second.

11:45 p.m. -- McCormick goes down swinging to a bender from Eflin, bringing up Maldonado. Maldonado bluffs bunt but takes strike one.

11:42 p.m. -- Zach Eflin, who has become a high-leverage staple in Rob Thomson's bullpen, is out for the ninth. He gives up an infield hit to Hensley to start the inning as he barehands a chopper with no play.

11:39 p.m. -- Astros get a HUGE defensive play from Mancini -- filling in for Gurriel -- down the line to get the Astros out of the inning. Great stab there as Schwarber looked like he was on Pressly's slider in that at-bat.

11:35 p.m. -- Clutch work from Pressly out of the pen! He gets Marsh swinging on a cutter for the second out of the inning, and it's going to be Schwarber coming up with runners at the corners. Quite possibly the biggest at bat of this series.

11:30 p.m. -- Now SEGURA takes it the other way to drive in Castellanos and drive in one. The Houston Astros bullpen finally gets touched, and Dusty Baker makes the call to Pressly.

11:28 p.m. -- Montero now walks Stott on four pitches, and Segura now steps up to the plate. Also of note: If Montero gets the next two hitters it'll be the top of the order for the ninth. Huge couple of walks.

11:26 p.m. -- Montero just outright overpowers Bohm with fastballs to bring up Stott with one out and a runner on. He is 0 of 3.

11:23 p.m. -- After a long at-bat, Castellanos finally draws a walk to bring up Alec Bohm with no one out and one on. He represents the tying run.

11:21 p.m. -- Catellanos leads off now against Montero, as the Astros get into the teeth of their bullpen. Castellanos is taking issue with calls now.

11:17 p.m. -- Robertson gets Mancini swinging as his struggles continue. Obviously a tough situation, but Robertson gets out with just one run allowed.

11:14 p.m. -- Tucker scorched one into right and Castellanos catches it at a full sprint for the second out. Peña advances to third and there are runners at the corners for Trey Mancini, who is in for Gurriel.

11:12 p.m. -- Bregman takes an eight-pitch walk from Robertson to bring Kyle Tucker up with runners on first and second. Double play is back in play, but Robertson has to induce a grounder first.

11:08 p.m. -- Hoskins boots one on the ground at first and is forced to tag Alvarez out at first. Altuve scores while Peña advances to second. Bregman steps up now with a chance to crack things open a bit more.

11:06 p.m. -- David Robertson is in the game to see Alvarez now in a huge situation.

11:02 p.m. -- Altuve gets on and on a hit-and-run Peña punches it where the gap at second was. Textbook work there from the rookie, who continues to rise to the moment. Alvarez now comes up as Dominguez goes out.

10:59 p.m. -- Dominguez now comes back out for the eighth against Altuve-Peña-Alvarez. Rafael Montero has been going in the Astros pen, so this score has to stay the same for the Phillies.

10:56 p.m. -- Abreu gets through a huge inning with a pop-out from Harper to third for the final out. Six outs left for the Phillies in this one.

10:53 p.m. -- And now Realmuto goes down swinging with a fastball. Harper up next.

10:51 p.m. -- Abreu gets Hoskins looking at strike three with Realmuto coming up. Nice slider that caught the corner.

10:49 p.m. -- Abreu remains in the game with Hoskins coming up. Realmuto is on deck while Bryce Harper waits third. Rafael Montero is up in the Astros bullpen.

10:45 p.m. -- Somehow Dominguez gets out of that inning without giving up a run with a Maldonado ground-out to short. We're rolling on in Philadelphia.

10:41 p.m. -- Another huge play here as the Phillies come home on a groundout and get Gurriel out after a rundown. Gurriel is helped off the field with a head injury after he took a knee from Hoskins. We'll see if he remains in the game.

10:39 p.m. -- And now Dominguez completely lets one fly and advances Gurriel for Hensley. Hensley chops one to Stott who looks Gurriel back to third to get the first out of the inning. McCormick is up with Maldonado on deck.

10:37 p.m. -- Dominguez steps in for the seventh inning now to face Gurriel, who bloops a hit into centerfield that drops just in front of a diving Marsh, and Gurriel ended up on second. Bad break there for the Phillies.

10:33 p.m. -- Schwarber hit one well but right into the shift (and frankly where Altuve would have been positioned anyways). He grounds out for the third out of the inning, and the threat is over quickly.

10:32 p.m. -- Abreu drills Marsh with the first pitch he throws and Marsh was NOT happy. Schwarber now comes up with runners on first and second.

10:28 p.m. -- After Neris gets Segura swinging, Dusty Baker gives him the hook in favor of Bryan Abreu. Just three batters for Neris.

10:24 p.m. -- Bohm takes Neris the other way for a base hit. Good work to dig in and poke out that splitter. Stott now steps in and flies out to right center where Tucker very nearly dropped it.

10:22 p.m. -- Hector Neris now takes over for the Astros, with Bohm coming to the plate. Good work by Verlander tonight to settle down after a few rocky innings.

10:19 p.m. -- Alvarado incduces a ground ball to first to get out of the inning, and the Phillies bullpen continues to do its job.

10:16 p.m. -- Bregman gets clipped by a pitch there so he takes first base after the Astros' challenge. Runners on first and second.

10:14 p.m. -- You didn't really think we'd get through three games in Philly without a runner did you?

10:11 p.m. -- Alvarado again comes up and in on the hands of Alvarez but this time gets him to pop out behind second. Second out of the inning as Bregman comes up, already with a double to his name after doubling off Alvarado last night.

10:10 p.m. -- Alvarado bounces back and gets Peña swinging with a 93 mph cutter. One down, runner on first for Alvarez, who Alvardo hit in Game 4.

10:07 p.m. -- Altuve chops one up the middle that Alvarado tried to pick behind his back but Segura instead can't make the play behind second after Altuve legs it out. Peña now steps up.

10:04 p.m. -- This is a huge inning, and Rob Thomson clearly realizes as much. Jose Alvarado is in to face the top of the Astros order. Seranthony Dominguez, who hasn't gotten a lot of work this series, looms. The Phillies desperately need runs, but it starts with keeping this a one-run game.

10 p.m. -- Verlander wins a 10-pitch battle vs. Castellanos, inducing a flyout to Alvarez in shallow left to end the inning. Houston still leads, but Verlander is up to 94 pitches after five.

9:57 p.m. -- Verlander's 84th pitch of the night turns into a two-out, line-drive double into the right-field corner by Harper. Castellanos is now pushing up that pitch count with a long at-bat.

9:50 p.m. -- Verlander begins his fifth by striking out Hoskins looking with a breaking ball and Realmuto swinging with a fastball.

9:44 p.m. -- Maldonado goes down swinging and it's two innings down for Brogdon. Good work there.

9:42 p.m. -- Brogdon mows through the first two batters before Maldonado steps up. He's given some good innings following Syndergaard's homer.

9:36 p.m. -- Now Schwarber goes down looking to a bender to end the inning. Verlander has lived offspeed since that leadoff homer.

9:33 p.m. -- Marsh now goes down looking for the second out of the inning, as Verlander looks for his first clean inning. Schwarber digs in next.

9:31 p.m. -- Peña's outstanding day continues, as he takes a chopper from Segura and guns him out at first. One down with Marsh coming up.

9:27 p.m. -- Now Brogdon gets Gurriel swinging to get out of the inning. Bregman's double doesn't come back to haunt him.

9:25 p.m. -- Brogdon got Tucker swinging on a changeup (after possibly getting a little help with an inside fastball), and now Gurriel comes up.

9:22 p.m. -- Now Bregman scorched one off the top of the wall off the window boxes, and he gets in with a double after nearly being thrown out by Schwarber. Tucker now comes up with one out and a runner in scoring position.

9:21 p.m. -- Brogdon gets Alvarez swinging out of the bullpen with some high heat. One down with Bregman coming up.

9:17 p.m. -- That now does it for Syndergaard. Connor Brogdon is on.

9:15 p.m. -- What a swing from Peña, as he got behind in the count and raked one to left for his fourth home run of the playoffs. Tremendous swing to give the Astros the lead back with one pitch after a few Phillies threats.

9:10 p.m. -- Verlander gets out of this one too, as he gets in on the hands of Stott and forces a fly-out to Tucker in right. Tucker stumbled but recovered quickly to make the play.

9:09 p.m. -- Bohm gets one past the outstretched glove of Peña for a hit to advance Harper. Jumped on a four-seam and now Stott steps up.

9:07 p.m. -- Castellanos scorches one 105 mph off the bat but Peña climbs the ladder and makes a sensational play. Huge play there, and it was hit so hard there wasn't even a chance to double up Harper. Inning will now rest on Bohm.

9:06 p.m. -- Harper walks again after working the count full, Verlander's fourth walk in the game. Nick Castellanos now steps up again with one out.

9:02 p.m. -- Umpire-catcher camaraderie abounds after a foul ball clips Maldonado in the mask. Baker checks up on him and the Astros catcher is fine. Realmuto now goes down swinging on another knuckle curve from Verlander, and Harper is up next. Great pitch.

8:58 p.m. -- Altuve rolls over a slider from Syndergaard and chops one to Stott, who throws him out to get out of the inning. J.T. Realmuto will lead off for the Phillies.

8:56 p.m. -- Syndergaard now gets in on the hands of Maldonado and he flies out to Marsh in center. The order now turns over to Altuve, who obviously doubled in his first at-bat.

8:53 p.m. -- Some shades of old Verlander in that last at-bat against Hoskins, with his fastball approaching 98 mph and his slider nearly touching 90. Chas McCormick now steps in against Syndergaard and promptly flies out to right. Maldonado up next.

8:50 p.m. -- Huge pitch there for Verlander, as he gets Hoskins swinging to get out of trouble. Much ado about nothing after a pair of walks, and Dusty Baker exhales in the dugout as well.

8:47 p.m. -- Verlander now loses Schwarber on the next four pitches and walks him to load up the bases with two outs. Rhys Hoskins will now step in for a huge at-bat.

8:45 p.m. -- Marsh now turns the heat up a bit with a five-pitch walk to bring up Kyle Schwarber, who takes a knuckle-curve for a first-pitch strike.

8:42 p.m. -- Segura jumps on Verlander now and rips one to left to keep the inning going. Verlander is still at only four pitches this inning, but Brandon Marsh comes up with a runner on.

8:40 p.m. -- Lots of jumpy bats tonight, as Alec Bohm comes up first pitch swinging and pops out to Bregman at third. Stott went up taking all the way and takes a curveball at the top of the zone for strike out. Now he's jammed up by a fastball, and he pops out to Peña behind second. Short work for Verlander so far as Segura digs in.

8:37 p.m. -- Hensley battled but a brutal curveball from Syndergaard falls off the table and gets him swinging for the third out. Big inning there and he might come out for the third.

8:35 p.m. -- Syndergaard seems to have recovered nicely from that brutal start. He got Tucker swinging and forced Gurriel into weak contact. Hensley is looking to do something this inning and keep things from being too simple.

8:28 p.m. -- Castellanos gets under one and flies out to left for the third out of the inning, and the ball turns back over to the Phillies after a long break.

8:25 p.m. -- Harper takes ball four to walk in a full count. Realistically it was probably ball five but he got yanked back by Jordan Baker.

8:23 p.m. -- After going down 0-2, Realmuto takes a slider and catches one off the end of the bat to pop out to second for the second out of the inning. Bryce Harper will now try to keep the inning alive.

8:21 p.m. -- Rhys Hoskins now lines out to Alvarez in left field for the first out of the inning. More good contact, just bad aim. Realmuto up now.

8:18 p.m. -- That's one way to get a run back. Verlander gives up a leadoff home run to Kyle Schwarber in the home half of the inning, and it's a whole new ballgame instantly. That's an inauspicious start for Verlander as his World Series struggles continue.

8:15 p.m. --- And Bregman goes down swinging on a slider to end the inning for Syndergaard. All things considered, that mitigates a lot of the damage. But the Phillies bats need to wake up early.

8:13 p.m. -- HUGE swing here for the Phillies, as Syndergaard gets Alvarez swinging and JT Realmuto catches Peña trying to steal second for the old strike 'em out throw 'em out. All big plays early as Alex Bregman steps up.

8:08 p.m. -- Correction: Double, E8 for Altuve, as Peña scorches one up the middle past the pulled-in infield to drive Altuve in for a quick Astros lead. They're jumping all over Syndergaard early.

8:07 p.m. -- And we're underway, with a ball away from Jose Altuve. Altuve then jumps on Syndergaard and triples to the right-center wall to lead of the game. Great swing the other way and the Astros call back to Game 2.

8:03 p.m. -- Philadelphia has Meek Mill on the scene driving around on a four-wheeler piloted by the Phanatic to perform ahead of Game 5 before the Phillies take the field. This is a choice.

7:37 p.m. -- It's almost time to put Game 4 completely in the rear-view. But before you do, see what Mr. October himself had to say about the Cristian Javier-helmed no-hit effort by the Astros. From TSN's Ryan Fagan.

7:15 p.m. -- It appears Phillies fans are not daunted by Wednesday's absolute debacle of a game.

6:42 p.m. -- No real surprises in either lineup, as it looks like Trey Mancini will sit out the rest of this series with David Hensley back in the lineup batting seventh. Martin Maldonado is also batting ninth after Christian Vasquez got the start behind the plate Wednesday.

6:40 p.m. -- And in this corner: The Astros are looking to build on their momentum from Wednesday's no-hitter, featuring a sterling performance from Cristian Javier's "invisible" fastball. Justin Verlander will make his second start of the series, looking to notch his first World Series winning decision.

6:40 p.m. -- The Phillies will be rocking their baby blues, a home game tradition on Thursday nights since 2018. Here's a look at their lineup, with Noah Syndergaard on the mound.
