Tigres UANL vs. Chivas Guadalajara result: Andre-Pierre Gignac scores twice, liguilla berth within reach

Andre-Pierre Gignac - Tigres UANL - October 27, 2021

Saturday's pressure-packed Liga MX match between giants Tigres UANL and Chivas de Guadalajara will carry significant playoff implications in the battle to get into the liguilla as only one regular-season match remains after this weekend.

Tigres (22 points) sit in fourth place in the Liga MX Apertura standings; the top four finishers earn a direct ticket to the liguilla quarterfinals. Head coach Miguel Herrera wants to see his team win out to clinch one of those top four spots, but they've been held to draws in four of their last five home games.

Chivas have only three fewer points than Tigres (19 points) but they're all the way down in 13th place, just one spot outside the playoff zone. Teams that finish fifth through 12th in the regular-season standings qualify to play a single-elimination play-in match — also known as the repechaje — for a berth in the liguilla quarterfinals.

It's a tall task for Chivas to come away with a win: They haven't won a match in El Volcan in 10 years and Tigres are one of two teams undefeated at home during the Apertura season (2-0-5). Any Chivas hopes of getting a result will have to start with an airtight defense that keeps Tigres star forward Andre-Pierre Gignac off the board. If the likes of Necaxa and Pumas UNAM earned 0-0 draws on the road against Tigres in recent weeks, Chivas will feel like they have a chance, especially given their penchant for playing low-scoring matches.

Sporting News will follow the match live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.
