Giants co-owner John Mara says 'plan B' is a possibility if Daniel Jones falters in 2022

There's always a plan B.

The Giants are, apparently, moving forward with Daniel Jones for a fourth year under the new regime of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. That, though, doesn't mean Jones is getting a fifth year.

While the Giants are determined to give Jones a fair shake this year with the new staff in place, owner John Mara isn't so sure that Jones is going to be New York's franchise passer beyond 2022.

"Daniel will get a chance next year and we’ll hopefully be able to get a fair evaluation of him and if it doesn’t work out we’ll go to plan B," Mara said on Monday after introducing Daboll. "But we have a lot of confidence it will work."

The Giants have remained adamant — Mara included — that the team didn't do enough to foster a positive environment for the young passer to grow within. That much is true: Jones will play for his third head coach and fourth offensive coordinator in just three years in the league, with offensive line and injury issues also hampering his development.

Jones, though, isn't absolved of his ineffectiveness: He's been the most turnover-prone QB in the league since entering in 2019, and also has had injury woes in his last two seasons. A neck injury ended his 2021 season prematurely.

Daboll wouldn't draw a parallel to Josh Allen, the quarterback he helped groom in Buffalo, and say he'd work out a system that best suits Jones' strengths.

"We’re not going to make any predictions," Daboll said. "I wouldn’t do that to Daniel or really any player. It’s not fair to compare him to another guy I was working with. We’re going to find out what he does well and try to get him in a system that suits him."

The question remains: What exactly is plan B for the Giants? Draft a quarterback? Start from scratch?

Time will tell.
