Several WWE NXT superstars, backstage personnel released to begin 2022

William Regal isn't only the NXT General Manager, he's also the director of talent development and head of global recruiting for WWE.

A new year and a new era of NXT has also resulted in new cuts by WWE.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful has reported several names who have were released on Wednesday following last night's NXT 2.0, where Bron Breakker became NXT Champion by beating Tommaso Ciampa. WWE released the following regarding the most recent cuts:

“With the continued evolution of NXT 2.0, we’ve decided to part ways with some of the staff based in our Performance Center," WWE's statement read. "We thank them for their many contributions throughout the years and wish them the best.”

One of the first names announced by Fightful was D-Generation X member Brian James, also known as Road Dogg. A multi-time tag team champion, Road Dogg has worked behind the scenes with WWE since 2014. He has been a producer and a writer for SmackDown and started working with talent in NXT in 2019.

Another major name let go was William Regal. A veteran in the pro wrestling business, Regal became the General Manager of NXT in 2014. When NXT 2.0 launched he no longer had that role, but was still seen within the product. Regal is considered one of the most knowledgeable wrestlers in the business. He oversaw Performance Center tryouts and attended independent wrestling shows as a recruiter. Regal's last in-ring match was in 2013.

Other personnel whom WWE let go of, per PWInsider, include coach Ace Steel, writers Ryan Katz and George Carroll (Carroll worked with MLW and New Japan Pro Wrestling in the past), Dave Kapoor (Ranjin Singh), referee Scott Armstrong and Cathy Corino. Corino, known as Allison Danger, is a multi-time champion known for running SHIMMER. She is related to former ECW Heavyweight Champion Steve Corino and just started working for WWE a few months ago.

Other talent let go include:

  • Hideki Suzuki of the Diamond Mine, who is also a coach at the WWE Performance Center
  • Timothy Thatcher, a former EVOLVE Champion who also served as a coach
  • Danny Burch, a former NXT Tag Team Champion who has also been working as a coach
