After snagging four medals in Rio five years ago as a bright-eyed 16-year-old, Penny Oleksiak is back in the pool looking for more hardware in Tokyo.
At the 2016 Summer Olympics, the Toronto native won a gold medal (100-meter freestyle), a silver (100 butterfly) and two bronzes (freestyle relay teams). Her four medals set a mark for a Canadian athlete in a single Summer Games, and tied her with Victor Davis' Canadian all-time record for Olympic swimmers.
With one more medal, she will tie rower Lesley Thompson-Willie and middle-distance runner Phil Edwards' record at five career summer medals apiece. With two more she'll tie Cindy Klassen (long track speedskating) and Clara Hughes (road cycling and long track speedskating) for most career medals by a Canadian all-time. Considering she'll hit the pool in a number of events, it's likely she'll pass them — and surpass them — by a wide margin.

Which events is Penny Oleksiak swimming?
After a year spent without a whole lot of racing due to the COVID-19 pandemic — and 122 days out of the water in 2020 — Oleksiak qualified for the 100 and 200 freestyle events. In June, she won the 100 freestyle at the Canadian Olympic Trials, thanks to the second-fastest time of her career.
The Olympic Games are her first international meets since January 2020, and the defending gold medalist for the 100 free will face some tough competition, including one of the greats in American Katie Ledecky. Fellow Canadian Summer McIntosh, who is just 14 and a rising star in the sport, will also be in the pool.
Oleksiak was a part of the 4x100 and 4x200 bronze-medal winning women's relays in Rio; she also was on the medley 4x100 team that came in fifth. Expect her to partake in these teams again in Tokyo.
