South Africa have claimed a six-wicket win over Bangladesh to heap more pressure on Australia, who face an early T20 World Cup exit.

Anrich Nortje (3-8) and Kagiso Rabada (3-20) together tore through Bangladesh's order, restricting them to a modest 84 run total.

Temba Bavuma (31 off 28 balls) then finished the job off for the Proteas with 39 balls left.

But the result was all but decided during a stunning powerplay effort from Rabada, who's fast proving himself as the tournament's form bowler.

The right-armer ripped through Bangladesh's top order, dismissing opener Mohammad Naim and Soumya Sarkar in consecutive balls in the third over, before Mushfiqur Rahim was stunted by a rising delivery that was clipped straight to Reeza Henricks at slip.

From there, only Liton Das (24) and Mahedi Hasan (27) could add some respect to the tally as the rest of Bangladesh's lineup failed to breach double figures with the bat.

The Proteas lost four early wickets but would only need 13 overs to reach the 84 run chase and register their third win of the group stages, which has made for an intriguing race to semi-final qualification.

While England are all but assured of going through, South Africa sit in second with six points, ahead of Australia (four points), who are still to play, and the West Indies.

However, the Proteas' chances of progressing are far stronger with a superior net run rate of +0.742 to Australia’s -0.627, who are reeling from a heavy defeat to England.

More to come
