Maddison Inglis

One of the great parts about every Australian Open is the young Aussies who get to make their mark against the best in the world, and this year is no different.

Maddison Inglis entered the Open as a wildcard selection but has more than earned her spot.

Here's everything you need to know about the Australian wildcard on a dream run.

WHO IS MADDISON INGLIS?

Maddison Inglis is a 24-year-old Australian professional tennis player, hailing from Perth, Western Australia.

HAS MADDISON INGLIS PLAYED IN THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN BEFORE?

This is not Maddison Inglis’ first time competing at the Australian Open, having first played in 2016 as an 18-year-old, going out in straight sets against 21st seed Ekaterina Makarova.

She was unsuccessful in qualifying for the Open for a number of years after this, but returned to Melbourne in 2021, again losing in straight sets to the fourth seed and then-reigning champion Sofia Kenin.

HOW MANY GRAND SLAM MATCHES HAS MADDISON INGLIS WON?

Despite being active since 2016, appearing in the Australian Open twice as well as the French Open and US Open in 2020, Inglis did not win her first Grand Slam match until January 18, 2022, when she toppled 23rd seed Leylah Annie Fernandez in straight sets.

She then backed this up with her second career victory, defeating American Hailey Baptiste in a thrilling three-set match that saw the Australian win six-straight games to win the match.

WHO WILL MADDISON INGLIS PLAY NEXT?

After beating Baptiste, Inglis will now have to wait to see who she will be facing off against in the third round; she plays the winner of the match between Estonia's Kaia Kanepi and Czech Republic's Marie Bouzkova.

HOW MUCH PRIZE MONEY WILL MADDISON INGLIS WIN?

Having advanced to the third round, the minimum amount of money that Inglis can win from the Australian Open is $221,000 AUD.

This is a significant payday for the Australian, whose career earnings to this point are $700,000, meaning this win will account for over a quarter of her career earnings.
