Aussie superstar Kaylee McKeown has taken out the 100m backstroke final to win her maiden Olympics gold medal.

McKeown was heavily favoured going into the event after setting the current world record at the Australian Olympic Trials in June.

However, it was clear that the event could go in any direction after the Olympic Record was broken on multiple occasions in the heats and semifinals.

The 20-year-old qualified third fastest for the final and was in lane three, the same lane Ariarne Titmus won the 400m freestyle in on Monday.

McKeown had a great start but turned third at the 50m mark behind Canada's Kylie Masse and America's Rhyan White.

But she produced a wonderful final 25 metres to power past Masse and touch the wall in first.

She hit the wall in a time of 57.47, a new Olympic Record and only 0.02 seconds off her World Record from the trials.

Masse finished in second while American Reagan Smith took out the bronze medal.

It was another great race from four-time Olympian Emily Seebohm who finished in fifth with a time of 58.45.
