What Do The Olyroos Need To Qualify For The Quarter-Finals

Despite defeats over the weekend, both the Matildas and Olyroos can still book their spots in the quarter-finals at the Tokyo Olympics.

Opening wins against New Zealand and Argentina respectively have both of Australia's football teams in good positions to escape their groups.

The green and gold have never won a medal in football at the Olympics and it would be some feat for the Matildas and Olyroos to both make the knockout stages.

Sporting News looks at what needs to happen for each team to progress...

What do the Matildas need to make the quarter-finals?

Current Group G standings

Team Played Win Draw Loss GF GA GD Points
Sweden 2 2 0 0 7 2 +5 6
United States 2 1 0 1 6 4 +2 3
Australia 2 1 0 1 4 5 -1 3
New Zealand 2 0 0 2 2 8 -6 0

Currently sitting third on goal difference, the Matildas must beat the United States on Tuesday night to claim first or second in Group G and automatically progress to the quarter-finals.

A draw or narrow loss, however, should still be enough to ensure Australia finish in third, willing that New Zealand don't beat Sweden by a big margin.

A third-place finish could then see the green and gold progress to the knockout stages as one of the two-best placed third-ranked teams.

After two matches, the Matildas are the highest ranked third-placed team with Japan and China trailling by two points.

Current third-place rankings

Team Played Win Draw Loss GF GA GD Points
Australia 2 1 0 1 4 5 -1 3
Japan 2 0 1 1 1 2 -1 1
China 2 0 1 1 4 9 -5 1

Though Japan are expected to beat Chile in their final group match on Tuesday, China face a dominant Netherlands and would need to pull off a massive shock to win.

Zambia, Chile and New Zealand are all bottom of their groups with no wins to date and would need very favourable results to progress at the expense of Australia via this route.

What do the Olyroos need to make the quarter-finals?

Current Group C standings

Team Played Win Draw Loss GF GA GD Points
Spain 2 1 1 0 1 0 +1 4
Australia 2 1 0 1 2 1 +1 3
Argentina 2 1 0 1 1 2 -1 3
Egypt 2 0 1 1 0 1 -1 1

As coach Graham Arnold stressed on Sunday, the Olyroos' fate stills rests in their hands heading into their final group game against Egypt.

A shock 2-0 win against Argentina last week was followed up by a late 1-0 defeat at the hands of Spain on Sunday but Australia are still well placed to progress.

Should the Olyroos beat Egypt, they could well claim top spot in Group C if Spain fail to beat Argentina and the South Americans themselves don't win by a margin that gives them a superior goal difference.

A draw for the green and gold should also secure them progression to the knockout stages in second place - regardless of the result between Spain and Argentina.

A defeat for Australia against Egypt would however be fatal as it would allow the African nation to leapfrog them and bundle them out of the top-two spots.

Unlike the Matildas, the Olyroos cannot progress to the quarter-finals as one the better ranked third-placed teams.

What are the tiebreakers for group standings at the Olympics?

Group standings for both men and women are decided on points with goal difference being the first tiebreaker used at the Games if two teams need to be split.

Should goal difference between two sides also be the same, number of goals scored will be used as the next tiebreaker followed by points obtained in matches played between the two teams.

Who could the Matildas and Olyroos play in the quarter-finals if they qualify?

As it stands, the Matildas are most likely to qualify as one of the best third-ranked teams and will face the winner of Group E with Great Britain and Canada vying for that position.

Should Australia beat the United States and progress in second place, they'd face the winner of Group F with Netherlands the current leaders of that section.

The Olyroos, meanwhile, are most likely to claim second place in Group C which would see them play the winner of Group D which is currently being topped by Brazil.

If Graham Arnold's side were to win their group, they'd play the runner-up of Group D with Ivory Coast occupying that position ahead of their final group game against third-placed Germany.
