Wayne Bennett has been confirmed as the inaugural coach of the NRL's 17th team, the Dolphins.

The news had already been widely reported when the Dolphins shared an image to social media on Thursday, a reference to Michael Jordan's iconic "I'm back" fax.

Bennett, 71, fronted a media conference at the Dolphins' Redcliffe headquarters on Thursday, discussing his plans for the competition's newest club.

The seven-time grand final winning coach has experience launching a successful club - he was the Broncos' inaugural coach in 1988 and led the team to six premierships.

Bennett went on to stints at St George Illawarra, Newcastle and South Sydney, adding another premiership to his tally with the Dragons in 2010.

The master coach fell just short of another this year as the Rabbitohs went down by two points to Penrith in the grand final.

More to come.
