Sacked Panthers utility Tyrone May will be plying his trade in the English Super League next season after signing a one-year deal with Catalans Dragons.

May, 25, will join the 2021 Super League runners-up after 56 NRL games with Penrith.

The playmaker was sacked by the reigning NRL premiers last month in response to a social media post he made following the club's grand final win.

May said he was happy to get another shot, this time in the south of France.

"First of all, I’m very grateful for this opportunity. I can’t thank the coach Steve McNamara, Alex Chan and the president Bernard Guasch enough for allowing me to come to such a great club with an amazing fan base," May said.

"I’m eager to meet my new teammates and gain their respect by working hard to go one better this year."

May's teammates will include former Roosters and Bulldogs prop Dylan Napa, while veteran halfback Mitchell Pearce has also reportedly signed a two-year deal with the club after departing the Knights.

Catalans coach Steve McNamara didn't address May's controversial Panthers exit in a statement to the club website.

"Tyrone will add great quality, depth and competition for places within our team," McNamara said.

"He arrives as a current Grand Final winner and his versatility and ability to play many positions to a high standard will be a huge asset for us."

The Dragons have a history of signing players who have been cast aside in Australia - Israel Folau notably returned to professional sport with Catalans following his sacking by Rugby Australia.

Catalans fell just short of a maiden Super League title this year, going down 12-10 to St Helens in the decider.

May's deal was terminated by the Panthers over a "serious breach of his NRL playing contract" relating to a social media post he made following Penrith's 14-12 win over South Sydney.

The image posted on Instagram referenced his 2019 court case where he pleaded guilty to four charges of intentionally recording an intimate image without consent.

May was savaged for the post and eventually took it down.

Penrith confirmed past indiscretions were factored into the decision to sack May with immediate effect.

"Penrith Panthers has today terminated the NRL playing contract of Tyrone May with immediate effect," a club statement read.

"The Panthers Board of Directors concluded May’s conduct following the 2021 NRL Grand Final constituted a serious breach of his contractual obligations.

"The Board also gave consideration to previous breaches in making the decision to terminate his contract at this time."
