Fair to say Patrick Herbert would like that one back.

The Titans centre opted to go himself, rather than passing to David Fifita or Corey Thompson, for what would have been the match-winning try in their elimination final against the Roosters.

In an absolutely epic encounter in Townsville, Gold Coast found themselves with a massive overlap on the right while down by one point with seconds on the clock.

Roosters winger Daniel Tupou did enough to stop Herbert, whose desperate flick pass went into touch, leaving Thompson and Fifita in shock.

The moment came after 80 minutes of pulsating footy in which the teams could only be separated by one point.

In a repeat of the round 14 meeting between the two sides, a Sam Walker field goal was the difference, as the Roosters kept their season alive with a 25-24 win.

Trent Robinson's side looked to have done enough when they had the Titans starting a set on their line with a minute on the clock.

Though Beau Fermor made a break down the left, passing the ball to Phillip Sami who was brought down by a desperate Walker tackle.

The Titans spread the ball to the right, but Herbert's option to go himself prevented an incredible comeback win.

More to come.
