Rugby league legend Greg Inglis will be running around on a rugby league field in Australia next year - but it won't be for any NRL club.

Inglis was released from his contract by Warrington earlier this year, after originally signing a one-year deal with the Super League outfit.

The 34-year-old retired back in April 2019 while playing with South Sydney, citing an ongoing injury concerns.

But in a shock twist, Inglis will now line up for the Macksville Sea Eagles in the Group 2 competition on the NSW north coast.

"The Macksville Sea Eagles are proud to announce the Signing of Greg Inglis for the 2022 Group 2 Rugby League Season," a club statement said.

"From 2011 to 2019 he played in the NRL for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, with whom he won a premiership in 2014.

"Last year, Greg played for the Warrington Wolves in the UK for the past season sharing his experience and expertise with the Super League.

"Greg looks forward to seeing continuing Rugby League career in his hometown of Macksville.

"He is proud to once again play for the club as his father did back when he was growing up in the Nambucca Valley.

"It means a lot to him and his family to be playing for Macksville once again."

Inglis was born in Kempsey and played his junior football for Bowraville Tigers, and will return to the area next year and line up in the CRL competition.
