One of Australian rugby league's most renowned figures, Norm Provan, has died.

The man who, along with Arthur Summons, adorns the NRL premiership trophy, passed away on Wednesday night, aged 88.

Provan is considered the most iconic figure from the legendary St George teams of the 50s and 60s, winning the first 10 of the club's 11 consecutive NSWRL grand finals.

The dominant backrower was retrospectively awarded the Clive Churchill Medal for man of the match in 1957, 1958 and 1963, while the final four of Provan's premiership wins came as captain-coach, a feat without equal before or since.

A photograph by John O'Gready of opponents Provan and Summons, covered head to toe in mud, embracing following the 1963 decider remains the sport's most enduring image.

In 2008, 'Sticks' was named in the second-row in Australian rugby league's Team of the Century, while in 2018 he was inducted as an Immortal.

Provan's death comes just one year after that of his great mate Summons, who passed away in May 2020.

More to come.
