Hockey

Kookaburras defeat Japan 5-3

Australia's men's field hockey team, the Kookaburras, got their Tokyo campaign off to a winning start, defeating hosts Japan 5-3.

The world number one ranked team didn't have it all their own way, losing 3-2 at half time.

However, they showed their class and scored three unanswered second half goals to get the important win.

"They're good. They're a quality side. I think they'll go far in this tournament," said Kookaburra Daniel Beale.

"(It's) good that we got the win against them but they're a very crafty, skilful and fast team, so not the easiest opponent."
