Surfing at the Olympics: Owen Wright takes out bronze medal

Surfing makes its debut at the Tokyo Olympics, and the schedule is underway. 

In total, 40 athletes - 20 men and 20 women - will compete, with a maximum of two people per gender per country. 

Here's a quick explainer on surfing at the Olympics. 

WHERE IS SURFING AT THE TOKYO OLYMPICS? 

The surfing event will take place at Tsurigasaki Beach in Ichinomiya, which is around 100km south east of Tokyo. 

WHAT TIME IS SURFING AT THE OLYMPICS? 

It got started early on day two of the games, with the heats starting at around (AEST) 8am.

Weather and waves permitting, the heats and semi-finals will be held from Sunday, July 25 to Tuesday, July 27

The finals for the mens and womens events are scheduled for Wednesday, July 28.

HOW TO WATCH SURFING AT THE OLYMPICS

Like the rest of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, surfing will be available to watch in Australia through the Seven Network. 

All the surfing, and the rest of the events at Tokyo 2020, will be available to watch on the Seven Network's digital platform, 7plus.

HOW DOES SURFING AT THE TOKYO OLYMPICS WORK? 

Surfers will each compete in heats, with four athletes per heat. Each heat lasts for around 30 minutes, and every surfer can catch as many waves as they can in that time. 

A surfer's top two scores are combined for their overall total. 

SURFING AT THE OLYMPICS - JUDGING

A five-person judging panel will assess each surfer's wave. 

The highest and lowest scores are discarded, with the middle three scores averaged to determine their overall score.

AUSTRALIANS SURFING AT THE TOKYO OLYMPICS

Australia are taking a strong surfing contingent to Tokyo, including Julian Wilson, Owen Wright in the men's and Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons in the women's.

For USA, WSL stars Kolohe Andino and John John Florence, along with four-time world champion Carissa Moore and Caroline Marks will also feature.

Others to watch include Brazil's Gabriel Medina and Kanoa Igarashi from Japan.

WHEN IS JULIAN WILSON SURFING? 

Wilson is in Heat 3, and will be taking to the water at (AEST) 9:20am on Sunday, July 25. 

WHEN IS OWEN WRIGHT SURFING? 

Wright is in Heat 4 and is scheduled to take to the water at (AEST) 10am on Sunday, July 25. 

WHEN IS SALLY FITZGIBBONS SURFING? 

Fitzgibbons is in Heat 2 of the women's competition and is scheduled to surf at (AEST) 12pm on Sunday, July 25.

WHEN IS STEPH GILMORE SURFING? 

Gilmore is in Heat 3 and is scheduled to surf at (AEST) 12:40pm on Sunday, July 25.
