NBA All-Star Game 2022: Australians Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels named to Rising Stars player pool

The Aussies are taking over NBA All-Star Weekend.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Josh Giddey and NBA G League Ignite standout Dyson Daniels will compete in the Clorox Rising Stars event at NBA All-Star Weekend in Cleveland. 

Giddey and Daniels made the cut for the final 28-man player pool, composed of 12 rookies, 12 sophomores and four G League Ignite players. The rookies and sophomores were selected by NBA assistant coaches, while the Ignite players were selected by the NBA G League head coaches.

Giddey, who has been named Western Conference Rookie of the Month twice already this season, is averaging 11.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 6.1 assists through 44 games, leading the rookie class in double-doubles with 11.

Meanwhile, Daniels, who is projected to be a lottery pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, has impressed with the Ignite this season, averaging 11.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists.

The two NBA Global Academy alumni join Andrew Bogut (2006, 2007), Kyrie Irving (2012, 2013), Dante Exum (2015, 2017), Matthew Dellavedova (2015) and Ben Simmons (2018, 2019) as the only Australian-born players to feature in the Rising Stars.

What is the Rising Stars format?

  • The Rising Stars format will feature a mini-tournament, made up of four seven-man teams, with the teams to be drafted prior to the event. The teams will be coached by a member of the NBA 75 team and assistant coaches from the 2022 NBA All-Star Game, with one G League player on each of the teams.
  • The games will be played to a final target score in a “Race to 75” to celebrate the NBA's 75th anniversary season. Games 1 and 2 will be played until a team reaches 50 points, while Game 3 will be played until a team reaches 25 points.
