Where will Tevita Pangai Junior be playing in 2022? Ranking the enforcer's likely destinations

Tevita Pangai Jnr

Brisbane Broncos enforcer Tevita Pangai Junior has been told he is free to leave, creating a huge dilemma for the second-rower.

The 25-year-old confirmed the news following his side's loss to the Rabbitohs in round 15, and will now look to secure an immediate move to an NRL rival.

Three clubs have already been linked to him, but no official decision has been made on his future.

As we've done with multiple off-contract players in recent months, we've decided to rank the potential destinations forn Pangai moving forward below.

1. WESTS TIGERS

The first club linked to Pangai actually came before the Broncos even told him he was free to go.

Tigers coach Michael Maguire secretly met with the second-rower back in May, leading to mass speculation about his future.

They are still the front-runners to sign him, however a report from The Australian's Brent Read surfaced this week that the Tigers have now got their eye on Storm veteran Dale Finucane.

If they miss out on Finucane, the likelihood is the Tigers will ramp up their pursuit of Pangai once again.

With their season hanging by a thread, a big-name signing in the forwards could be exactly what the Tigers need for both the remainder of 2021 and in the long-term.

2. ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS

As part of the report regarding the Tigers-Finucane, Read also revealed that the Dragons are considering making a play for the 25-year-old.

This is a move that does make a lot of sense in theory, with the Red V losing Tyson Frizell, James Graham, Trent Merrin and Jacob Host in the forwards in the past 12 months.

Merrin's retirement left them with some wiggle room in the salary cap for the rest of this year, while moving forward they have already told star players Corey Norman and Matt Dufty they won't be retained.

St George Illawarra will have the money there to sign a player of Pangai's calibre immediately and on a long-term deal, with CEO Ryan Webb telling The Red V Podcast they are looking to sign a quality forward.

Add in the fact that a bunch of Pangai's ex-Broncos teammates are already at the Dragons, and this looks like it could be a match made in heaven.

3. CANTERBURY BULLDOGS

A club that is always linked with high-profile stars, Canterbury could do with Pangai's X-factor and punch in the middle.

Reports surfaced on Friday via Fox Sports that the Belmore-based outfit were sounding out Pangai for a move there.

After they missed out on prime target Shaun Johnson, Canterbury are still hunting a halfback for next year - but are now chasing the Broncos enforcer.

Trent Barrett has proven that he can pull off the big signings after landing Josh Addo-Carr and Matt Burton. Could he do it again?

4. SYDNEY ROOSTERS

While they are yet to enter the race publicly, the Roosters were keen on securing Pangai a couple of years ago and are now in a great position to do so.

Following the retirements of Boyd Cordner, Jake Friend and Brett Morris, the club should have some room in the salary cap and could feasibly sign Pangai.

The loss of Cordner also opens a spot in the second-row rotation for the Roosters, while the injury to Lindsay Collins could also see a player like Pangai play in tight for the short-term.

Trent Robinson has been interested in TPJ before, so there's reason to believe he could be again.

5. CANBERRA RAIDERS

A former club for Pangai, the second-rower signed a three-year deal with the Raiders but was released early in 2016 to move to Red Hill.

Five years later, the Green Machine could be a genuine option to sign the unwanted star.

After losing John Bateman and George Williams, they could have the cap space and the desire to sign a player of Pangai's quality.

Things aren't going too well in the nation's capital this year, so Ricky Stuart could turn to the Tongan international to help turn things around.
