ALEX VOLKANOVSKI IS AN ANIMAL!

The 32-year-old Aussie retained the UFC featherweight championship with a unanimous decision win over Brian Ortega in an epic fight at UFC 266 in Las Vegas.

Volkanovski etched his name into UFC title fight legend with some of the most insane submission escapes we've ever seen.

The champ secured the first two rounds, controlling the octagon and scoring with his jab, right hand and leg kicks.

Ortega had his moments in the opening stages but Volkanovski looked to have the edge in the stand up.

The fight changed course dramatically mid-way through the third round when an Ortega left hand slipped through, sending Volkanovski to the mat.

Sensing the chance for a submission, Ortega jumped on Volkanovki's neck and looked to have the mounted guillotine well and truly locked in.

Somehow Volkanovski survived, slipping out of the attempt, only for Ortega to then jump on a d'arce choke.

Volkanovski again escaped, finding himself on top and looking for a stoppage win of his own with some vicious ground and pound.

BJJ black belt Ortega then latched onto another submission attempt, this time a triangle choke looked like it might spell the end of Volkanovski's title reign.

But the featherweight king would not give in, finding his way out only to turn around and deliver a barrage of strikes with Ortega on his back before the bell brought an end to one of the all-time great rounds.

That wouldn't be the end of the drama, as Ortega again latched onto a guillotine in the fourth round.

It would be a case of deja vu as Volkanovski slipped out, maintaining his trademark volume to finish the stronger of the pair.

In the end, all three judges scored it for the Australian (50-45, 50-44, 49-46), giving him his second title defence.

More to come.
