After defying the doubters to win a trophy in his first few months with Celtic, don't expect Australian manager Ange Postecoglou to put his feet up anytime soon.

The former Socceroos coach is notoriously relentless and will be aiming for a big 2022 with the Hoops.

Though they ended 2021 by lifting the Scottish League Cup, the past few years have been disappointing by Celtic's high standards and Postecoglou will be determined to keep the club on track moving forward.

New players bring even more goals

Celtic had found themselves short on players at times this season and Postecoglou wasted no time reinforcing over the New Year.

Japanese trio Yosuke Ideguchi, Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate have all been brought to Glasgow looking to replicate the swift success of summer signing Kyogo Furuhashi.

Furuhashi already has 16 goals to his name this season across all competitions to become an exclamation mark on Postecoglou's bold attacking style of play.

While the Hoops' new Japanese trio may struggle to match Furuhashi's impact, they all have real quality with Maeda for one arriving in Scotland after scoring 22 goals in the J-League last season.

Postecoglou hasn't ruled out further signings either with Socceroos midfielder Riley McGree reportedly close to a possible move

The Aussie would add some real versatility to Celtic's midfield and is more than capable of contributing in the final third.

With a reinforced squad and other attacking players like Tom Rogic starting to find their feet in front of goal, the Hoops should start to fire even more freely as Postecoglou pushes his side forward.

"We showed the kind of football we want to play and the kind of football team we want to be, we just want to do that on a more consistent basis and at a better level than before," Postecoglou told Celtic TV last week.

"If we do that, I think with what is coming up, it gives us more of a chance for success which is always the aim."

Next Old Firm derby could decide league title

The measure of success this season will largely come down to whether Celtic can dethrone Rangers to reclaim the league title.

As things stand, the Hoops are six points shy of their fierce rivals with 13 games remaining but do boast a slightly better goal difference.

After losing away to Rangers 1-0 earlier this season, the duo are set to face off at Celtic Park in early February where a win for Postecoglou's side is crucial to keep the title race alive.

Should the Hoops lose, they'd be left relying on Rangers stumbling significantly by season's end, while they also must avoid dropping any points in the league themselves.

Other avenues for more silverware

Though failing in the league would be a bitter pill to swallow, Postecoglou could still end his first season at Celtic with a handful of silverware.

The 2021-22 Scottish Cup is currently at the fourth-round stage with the Hoops due to face third-division side Alloa Athletic on January 22.

A win would take Celtic to the quarter-finals and just three games away from another title.

Postecoglou's side have already shown they have the nerve to win knockout competitions after coming from behind in the final to win the Scottish League Cup in December against Hibernian.

History is also on the Hoops' side with the club winning the Scottish Cup a record 40 times.

While the Hoops were knocked out of the Europa League at the group stage, finishing third has seen them placed in a play-off for the new Conference League.

They will play Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt across two legs in February with the winner progressing to the competition's round of 16.

As the third-division of European club competition, Celtic could be one of the stronger clubs in the Conference League with the likes of Roma, Leicester City and Feyenoord looming as their biggest rivals to the title should they progress past the play-off stage.

Though more silverware would be an ideal way to end Postecoglou's first season in charge, the Aussie is a long-term thinker and will be hoping to sow the seeds for even greater future success.

A coach that typically takes time to get his team performing consistently, 2022 could be the year Postecoglou shows the world his true potential.
