Victoria firebrand James Pattinson has been sanctioned for an incident in his side's recent Sheffield Shield win over New South Wales.

The paceman was bowling to Dan Hughes when he fielded a ball and threw it back towards the Blues batter.

Hughes was struck on the foot and didn't look best pleased with the former Test player.

Cricket Australia confirmed on Wednesday Pattinson had been fined 100 per cent of his match fee and would be suspended from the upcoming one-day match between the two teams.

"Victoria player James Pattinson has been found guilty of a Level 2 offence under the Cricket Australia Code of Conduct," a statement read.

"Pattinson was charged and found guilty under Article 2.7 of the Code for throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a match.

"Pattinson was fined 100% of his match fee for the Marsh Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and New South Wales held on November 5-8, 2021.

"He also received one suspension point and will be ineligible for selection in the Victoria v New South Wales Marsh One-Day Cup match on November 12."

Pattinson, 31, last month annnounced his retirement from Test cricket after 21 appearances for Australia, citing a desire to focus on his family and state commitments.
