The Penrith Panthers have torn up the contract of Tyrone May in the wake of a string of controversies from the young playmaker.

May was last week stood down by the Panthers indefinitely over a "serious breach of his NRL playing contract" relating to a social media post he made following Penrith's grand final win.

The image posted on Instagram referenced his 2019 court case relating to charges of intentionally recording an intimate image without consent.

May was savaged for the post and immediately took it down while he was later fined $7500 by the Panthers.

It's not the first time May's behaviour has brought the club into disrepute after he and halfback Nathan Cleary were fined and suspended for breaking COVID-19 stay-at-home orders early last year.

Penrith announced on Wednesday in consideration of past indiscretions, a decision had been made to sack May with immediate effect.

"Penrith Panthers has today terminated the NRL playing contract of Tyrone May with immediate effect," a club statement read.

"The Panthers Board of Directors concluded May’s conduct following the 2021 NRL Grand Final constituted a serious breach of his contractual obligations.

"The Board also gave consideration to previous breaches in making the decision to terminate his contract at this time.

Panthers CEO Bryan Fletcher said May would be offered support by the club following the termination of his contract.

“As a club we understand our responsibilities to the game, our corporate partners, our members and fans, and the wider Rugby League community,” Fletcher said.

“The Board observed due process in this matter and considered all relevant factors before reaching its final decision.

“Panthers will coordinate with the NRL to ensure Tyrone receives access to any support services he needs moving forward.”
