Chelsea and Matildas striker Sam Kerr has achieved her highest-ever finish in the women's Ballon d'Or, coming in third in this year's edition.

The superstar 28-year-old has previously recorded finishes of 5th and 7th in the award which recognises the world's best female footballer.

It was a Barcelona quinella in Paris on Tuesday morning, as Alexia Putellas claimed a maiden women's Ballon d'Or, while teammate Jennifer Hermosa finished second.

Dutch pair, Vivianne Miedema (Arsenal) and Leike Martens, also with Barcelona, rounded out the top five.

Kerr currently sits atop the goalscoring table in the English Women's Super League, finding the back of the net nine times in just eight matches.

In the 2020-21 campaign, Kerr booted 21 goals in 22 games to claim the competition's golden boot - a feat she'd already achieved in Australia and the USA.

At international level this year, Kerr overcame a slow start under new coach Tony Gustavsson to play a key role at the Olympics, bagging six goals in Tokyo.

The West Aussie is one of only four players to have been nominated for the women's Ballon d'Or in all three years it has been awarded since its inception in 2018 (the 2020 edition was cancelled due to COVID-19).

Meanwhile, Argentina and PSG star Lionel Messi took home a seventh Ballon d'Or.

He beat out Bayern Munich and Poland forward Robert Lewandowski, who was the other top contender.
