T20 World Cup 2021: Sri Lanka flex their muscle in dominant win, Namibia keep Super 12s hopes alive

Wanindu Hasaranga

Sri Lanka have flexed their muscle in the group stage of the T20 World Cup, producing a dominant win over Ireland.

Wanindu Hasaranga (71 and 1/12) impressed with both bat and ball, while Irish skipper Andrew Balbirnie (41) was the only player to show some real resistance.

Elsewhere on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, Namibia picked up a six-wicket win over Netherlands to keep their Super 12s hopes alive.

Here's our full wrap of the day four of the T20 World Cup.

SRI LANKA 7/171 def. IRELAND 101

Sri Lanka have booked their spot into the Super 12s with another strong performance on Thursday morning (AEDT), defeating Ireland by 70 runs after a very shaky start.

After losing their first three wickets for just 8 runs, Wanindu Hasaranga (71 off 47) and Pathum Nissanka (61 off 47) put on a 123-run stand to get them back on top.

A late cameo from captain Dasun Shanaka (21 off 11) helped Sri Lanka to the highest score so far in the tournament, finishing 7/171 from their 20 overs.

Irish opening duo Paul Stirling (7) and Kevin O'Brien (5) both fell cheaply, but their skipper stood up and got them back into the fight.

Andrew Balbirnie (41 off 39) looked to steady the ship but wickets continued to fall around him, with all-rounder Curtis Campher (24 off 28) the only other player to reach double-figures.

In the end Sri Lanka's bowling proved far too strong, with Maheesh Theekshana (3/17 off 4) picking up crucial wickets throughout Ireland's top and middle-order, as they won by 70 runs.

Ireland will now need to defeat Namibia in their final group stage match to advance to the Super 12s.

NAMIBIA 4/166 def. NETHERLANDS 4/164

In a much closer affair than the above match, Namibia were able to keep their Super 12s hopes alive with a six-wicket victory over Netherlands on Wednesday night.

Max O'Dowd (70 off 56) and Stephan Myburgh (17 off 16) got the Dutch side off to a solid start in the first five overs, before a couple of quick wickets evened things up.

An 82-run partnership between O'Dowd and Colin Ackermann (35 off 32) got Netherlands into a really solid spot with a few overs left in their innings, before a quick-fire knock from wicket-keeper Scott Edwards (21 off 11) helped them to a very defendable score of 4/164.

In the run chase, Namibia were able to get off to a solid start with openers Stephan Baard (19 off 20) and Zane Green (15 off 12) combining for six boundaries between them.

Things got a little dicey for a few overs in the chase, but Namibia were able to get back on track thanks to a marvellous knock from David Wiese (66* off 40) and fantastic support from skipper Gerhard Erasmus (32 off 22).

Wiese blasted 4 fours and 5 sixes during his unbeaten knock, guiding Namibia to a six-wicket win with six balls remaining.

Netherlands are now out of contention for the Super 12s after two losses, while Namibia will need to pull off an upset against Ireland to qualify for the next stage.
